I do know the finish is definitely not nitro. Someone once told me they thought basswood. It looks, feels, plays, and sounds like a great 50s model, and I don't even know or care what the body wood is. (It's the only guitar I've had that made Fender Texas Specials sound really fine, IMO). By which I mean it's sounded great with any of the pickups I've tried. It currently has Fralin pickups but is one of those guitars that seems able to transcend pickup choice. I mostly use it for recording, when I want THAT sound. It's the most vintage sounding Strat I've ever owned. Over the years it's had a refret with larger wire (the original frets wore out relatively quickly), and it's had a few different pickup combinations. Back in the 80s I bought a new, MIJ 57 Reissue which I still have after many others have come and gone.

I've had a number of them since, mostly US made. I've played Strats since I bought my first new 1970 model in 71. I've mentioned this before, but since this is a thread about Japan made Fenders, I'll tell it again. And then some guy/girl at a music store plays the song "Machine Gun" note for note like Hendrix played it on the Band of gypsies, we freak out and then we all realize that that person just did that on a $100.00 guitar and a $300.00 amp and somehow we are never the same after experiencing that. We (myself included) go through all these gyrations about vintage and all original and all of that crap. Buy your dream guitar later whatever that guitar happens to be when you can afford it. Buy a good guitar in the style that you like and buy a good amp and practice like hell. The flip side of all this is that Joe Smith in the audience doesn't care whether you're playing A Fender all original 1959 Vintage Stratocaster or $90.00 Fender Stratocaster made from spare parts as long as he likes the music you're playing. The only MIM Fender that I played and liked was almost just as as expensive as an American Standard. That is not to say MIM Fenders are automatically inferior. Both are about as expensive as Mexican Fenders but I tend to gravitate towards the Japanese made, just my opinion. I think Fenders made in Japan are good guitars, the two I have don't sound vintage or at least not to me, but they do sound good and they are easy to play. I have owned PRS SE, ESP, and Fender guitars (Korea, Japan, Japan) I can't vouch for all the guitars coming out of Japan and Korea these days, but my experience has been very good.
